6th Annual North Lake Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival at Squaw

April 26, 2008

10 am – 5 pm.

The theme for this year’s event is “Giant Steps Towards Smaller Footprints,” with a focus on issues such as Zero Waste, green building, climate change, forest and habitat preservation, recycling, and more. The event is free with a multitude of activities and is suitable for all ages. North Lake Tahoe Truckee Earth Day has become the largest environmental event in the region, combining world class musical entertainment, thought provoking speakers and over 50 booths featuring non profit organizations, local, state and federal agency representatives and green businesses. T.A.R.T is providing free transportation to the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival and admission to Saturday’s festival is free as well. In addition, Squaw Valley is encouraging guests to carpool to the resort to help cut down on harmful emissions.

ZERO Waste! This event will strive to be a "carbon neutral" event. The TruckeeClimate Action Network will calculate all the emissions involved in producing the event and whatever can't be reduced will be offset through the purchase of green tags.

PUSH, PULL or PEDAL ECO PARADE . . . For Kids of All Ages!
The Push, Pull or Pedal Eco Parade is becoming more popular each year and is for kids of all ages! This year, the Push, Pull, Pedal parade will kick off the festival. Participants are encouraged to develop a non-motorized craft such as a wagon, bike or tricycle made from recycled materials and push, pull or pedal it past judges. Registration begins at 9:30am with the parade commencing at the main stage at 10:30 am. Great prizes will be awarded to the top contestants, including a Children's 2008/09 Squaw Season Pass! There will also be an expansive children’s activity area sponsored by the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe, a performance by the Glenshire Choir and student art work displays.

NEW THIS YEAR: THE EARTH CAPADES
Earth Capades is an environmental vaudeville troupe that engages and educates through participation, improvisation and fun. They have spent the past four years touring the United States and Canada receiving rave reviews. The Earth Capades Planetary Circus weaves water awareness and waste reduction with comedy, audience participation and circus acts, bringing volunteers up onto the stage. HAUTE TRASH FASHION SHOW
The Haute Trash Fashion Show returns in 2008 by popular demand! Haute Trash is a troupe of resourceful artists from the Nevada City area who produce runway fashion shows featuring styles made from society’s trash, encouraging others to rethink, reuse and recycle. Haute Trash has appeared nationally with rave reviews and will perform on Saturday in the Village.

LIVE MUSIC LINE-UP
San Francisco based ALBINO!, the award winning 12-piece “Heavy Heavy Afrobeat” ensemble, will headline the 2008 North Lake Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival scheduled for Saturday, April 26th at the Village at Squaw Valley USA. Other bands on tap for the day include MO2, Rainmaker, SubjecktoChange, Naomi and the Courteous Rudeboys, Verbal Kint and the Mark Sexton Band.

A fantastic musical lineup running from 10:30 am until 6:00 pm is just one facet of this year’s celebration however. New this year is the Earth Capades planetary circus. The Earth Capades Planetary Circus weaves water awareness and waste reduction with comedy, audience participation and circus acts, bringing volunteers up onto the stage and engaging young and old alike. Be sure to catch the Glenshire Elementary Choir performing on the First Street Stage at 11:00 am!

PATAGONIA WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL (Friday, April 25)
For the third year, Tahoe Truckee Earth Day welcomes the Patagonia Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival (WSEFF), which begins at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 25 at the Olympic Village Lodge in Squaw Valley, features a selection of ten films chosen from among the hundreds originally screened at the WSEEF in Nevada City in January. Tickets are $10 advance, $12 at the door, and will be on sale in April at New Moon Natural Foods in Truckee and Tahoe City, Mad about Music in Kings Beach and Alice's Market in Squaw. Do Your Part. Ride TART
T.A.R.T. will be offering free transportation to and from the event from North Lake Tahoe, Incline Village and Truckee. There will also be a mass bike ride planned from Tahoe City and Truckee to the event.
